The Big Brown
Bear
Sometime during the middle of summer
while Natalia's dryfish was hanging in the smokehouse over by the
slough a big Brown bear came for a visit. It came to her smokehouse
early in the morning, and Natalia didn't know about it until Jackie
and Theresa told her there was something down there making loud
noises. Then, Joel Isaac and Jackie went down to check what it was.
They came back and said it was a big brown bear. So Natalia's
husband, Herman, went down with them. They saw the bear was caught in
a snare Herman had set and had broken the side of Natalia's
smokehouse and taken a couple of her fish.
While the bear was in the snare it
strangled to death. Then he called Richard Ellis and asked him what
they should do with the bear. Richard went down to the slough and
told Herman that after skinning the bear he would have to take the
claws and some of the parts and send them into Fish and
Game.
Natalia said she was nervous and
scared about the bear. But she was glad he hadn't come during the day
when she would've been down there. The next day a lot of people went
down to check the bear.
