Always hesitate before answering or responding.  Give yourself time to analyze the other person's points first.

 

 

 

   
 

Many people put their most important point last, even thought it isn't to their advantage to do so.  Be sure to hesitate in your response until you are sure they have gotten to their main or final point.

But don't think that the preliminary talk is just padding or wasting time.  Those points are often important clues to what's behind the main point.  Be sure not to be distracted and pay too much attention to secondary points along the way.  Wait until the other person has finished to assess which are the main points and which are points given for background.

 

   
   
 

If you start cold, warm up (19) and emphasize two-way communication (27) you will stand a better chance of hearing the other person.  Watch your diet (48) to avoid such things as coffee that tend to speed you up in conversation.
