This collection of student work is from
Frank Keim's classes. He has wanted to share these works for others
to use as an example of Culturally-based curriculum and documentation. These
documents have been OCR-scanned. These are available
for educational use only.
Whats Happenin' at
School?
Frank's Classes
Over the past few weeks students in Frank's
English classes have been reading Fallen Angels, a
novel about the Vietnam War by Walter Dean Myers. They have viewed
part of the long video series on the Vietnam War and heard community
member Richard Oney's personal account of his participation in the
war in the early 1970's. They have also been working on their next
Fox Fire book, Fish, Fire and Water which involves research on
Alaska's fish species and fishing issues such as global
warming.
In World Studies his students are presently
on Latin America. Recently a Peruvian came to his class to talk about
Peru in Spanish. Frank was the translator.
Journalism has been devoted to a Cultural
Journalism project titled Building Personalities of Marshall,
journalism analyses of various types of magazines, a unit on
comics presented by the student teacher, Flora Evan, and, most
recently, the October newspaper.
In Russian Frank and his students have been
studying days, months, prepositions, common verbs and expressions,
and the past tense.
Donna Best's Special
Olympics
Donna reports that "Special Olympics is a year
round program which provides sports training and competition for
athletes all over the world. We are fortunate here in the LYSD to
have a strong program which was established five years
ago.
Special Olympics training began this year on Sept.
12 with students from grades 3-1 1 participating in bowling training.
The bowling team is very excited about the opportunity to learn a new
sport and have a great time in the process. We are currently working
hard to prepare for a possible tournament at a "real" bowing alley in
Bethel. At this tournament we will bowl against teams from Pitka's
Pt., Pilot Station, Russian Mission, Mtn. Village and St.
Mary's.
We hope to expand our Special Olympics program in
the Lower Yukon area by adding cross-country skiing in the winter and
floor hockey in the spring."
Marshall Student Council
Report
The Student Council officers were elected on
September 17. The officers are: Jackie George, President; Charlotte
Alstrom, Vice President; and Cheryl Hunter,
Secretary-Treasurer.
Our goal for the Student Council is to make it an
enjoyable year for everyone here in the Marshall School. We are
presently working on organizing the student store and getting used to
our new way of conducting business.
Our plans for this year are to raise more money so
we can get the things we need for the students. We are planning to
purchase basketball uniforms, jackets, and more things for the
student store to make more of a profit. We also want to get a good
D.J. for the Prom and have a nice graduation ceremony. Our other
plans are to have intermural games for all grades and have school
parties where students can watch movies.
We want to make everyone happy so they will enjoy
the school year.
