AKABE is affiliated with both NABE, National Association for Bilingual Education and TESOL, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

AKABE was chartered in 1980 and began co-sponsoring the BMEEC in 1981.

AKABE has been an affiliate of NABE and TESOL for over 29 years!

AKABE’s goals include:

  • Supporting heritage language, bilingual programs and ESL programs at both the K-12 and adult levels.
  • Promoting the retention of heritage languages and cultures.
  • Advocacy for parent involvement in the education of children both at home and at school.
  • Supporting professional development for school staff who assist English language learners.
  • Disseminating information about language acquisition, bilingual education and issues impacting English language learners and their families.
  • Recognizing & celebrating organizations, students and teachers who support bilingualism.
