SNIPERS AND SWALLOWS

People used to get the eggs of many birds, but never those of snipers. They used to leave their eggs alone. They would also not look at these birds when they were flying. If you did look up at them they would start diving and would get closer. Also even if their eggs were found we were told to leave them alone. I don't know why we were told to leave them alone, even though we always took other eggs. Those eggs we always left alone. Sometimes when sniper were flying we would hear them and they would get closer and louder. We never collected certain other eggs either, like small ones of birds that live in trees, like swallows. They made their nests for their babies in trees, or on the land, sometimes near the ocean.

Out at the edge of the ocean on some hillsides they had their babies, and when they fly, boy, it's like they're playing, just swooping up and down with the other birds the way they do. They would fly really fast, first down low to the land then up again high into the sky, all in the snap of a finger. Above the shallow part of the bay on the side of the hill, that's where they used to be.
