Emphasize the other person's autonomy and freedom of action.  Offer alternatives..

 

 

 

   
 

Your client or colleague does not want to feel pressured into acting in any particular way you may propose or recommend.  Always acknowledge your imperfect knowledge of the other person'sneeds or best interest.  Your strongest advice should begin with 'If I were you,...'

Keep in mind that if you help your client get what he or she needs out of the contact with you, he or she will be much more inclined to help you get what you need as well.

 

   
   
 

Acknowledge power (12) both where the other is the decision maker and where you are.  Avoid controlling the situation and instead of a question use a statement (13).  Watch that you do not crowd the other's physical personal space (25) and hedge (35) by avoiding stating your case too strongly so that you do not crowd the other's conversational space either.
