This member of the buttercup family grows at the edge of bog lakes and is semi-aquatic. The leaves are three cleft, and look something like toes. The flowers are white and have 6-10 petals, with 1-2 flowers growing on a flower stalk. The stem is underground and grows horizontally.

Gabuti is a treasured plant that has been nearly wiped out of the Golovin area. I searched for this plant in the lakes behind Golovin on Chinik Creek and was unable to find it. I was told by several people about gabuti It is picked with rakes, to dig the stem out of the water. The stems are eaten boiled and have a peppery taste.

Agnes Amorak said that she went looking for the plant several years ago with her granddaughter, Denise Oliver, but they were also unsuccessful at finding the plant. I was told by Agnes' daughter, Isma, that one of the lake at Kachavik Creek had gabuti but it had dried up.
