A 6th Grade Social Studies Unit
SPECIFICATIONS
Subjects:
Pre-contact Aleut culture, theory of
contact with another culture, cultural change, Russian period in the
Aleutians, with brief portions on the American and modern periods in
the Aleutians.
Scope/Sequence:
This unit was designed to fit within the
sixth grade social studies and language arts scope and sequence for
the Anchorage School District. Specific areas of congruence
include:
1. Social Studies
a. Alaska: relates Alaskan
history, technology, and cross-cultural influences
b. Anthropology and Sociology: tells concepts of cultural clashes
and contacts
c. History: details that portion of Alaskan history which occurred
in the Aleutian Islands
2. Language Arts:
a. Draws logical conclusions on
the basis of what is read
b. Uses reading to explore, clarify, and affirm his or her own
values
c. Recognizes a variety of poetic forms
Grade level: 6th
Duration: Approximately 9
weeks
Methods:
A variety including inquiry method,
reading for content, simulations, worksheets, small group work, class
discussions, games, map work, quizzes
Format:
Divided into 5 sections, each of which
have specific objectives and materials associated with it.
